When it comes to rescue dogs almost all of us think of “problem dogs” but that is not the case anymore. Man’s (or woman’s) best friend is being put on the back burner, with more and more “Paris Hilton dogs” being abandoned and unwanted in Essex.
Mistley Place Park is a pet rehoming center based in North Essex. The center takes in unwanted dogs, cats and other small animals with the aim to rehome them. At the moment they have three Chihuahuas for rehoming, Chloe, Yogi and Maggie. They also have six other small dogs including Jackson a toy poodle, Lola a French Bulldog and Terriers.
Charlotte Cleveland, who works at the center said “People are just breeding them thinking it will be easy to sell them for lots of money, but it’s not.”
She claimed lots of the small dogs they take in at the center are young dogs that breeders haven’t been able to sell on.
“We get spurts of breeds… last year we had a lot of pomeranians.” Charlotte said.
“There is no ideal type of person to rehome a dog” Charlotte said “It’s just finding the right match with the person and the dog. Retired couples are always good because they’re at home all day… but some dogs benefit from a family with lots of children to run around and play.”
She told us they will keep any dog until the day they die if it can’t be rehomed and they all live together on the farm.
Overall in the UK there are 144,800 Yorkshire Terriers microchipped in the UK making them the 8th most popular dogs. Chihuahua, Lhasa Apso and Bichon Frise are ranking at 17th, 18th and 19th.
According to BBC Dog Map, the most popular dogs in Colchester and it’s surrounding area are Labrador Retrievers with 5,000 microchipped locally. The second most popular dogs are Staffordshire Bull Terriers, with 2,700 microchipped. With this many large dogs, it doesn’t leave a lot of room in our homes for smaller furry friends.
Paris Hilton has been infamous for having various different dogs including; Tinkerbell the Chihuahua, Prince the Pomeranian, and various other Yorkshire Terriers and Pugs.
Paris isn’t the only star to be snapped with a tiny pup under her arm. It is becoming a quite the fashion accessory. Celebs such as Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Ashley Olsen all share a love for tiny dogs. But, even the miniature dogs seen on The Only Way is Essex (TOWIE) aren’t enough to influence Essex locals take in a tiny pooch.
